Learning in Practice | Week 12

This week included a focused workshop on print processes, which helped me understand the technical side of design in much more detail.

While I had previously been introduced to print and packaging, this session gave a clearer understanding of how files need to be prepared for production. It covered elements like foil, metallic finishes, white separation, UV printing, and UV gloss, and how each of these requires specific file setups.

One of the key learnings was how important it is to structure files correctly. Each finish whether it’s foil or UV needs to be defined separately and accurately. These are not just visual decisions but technical instructions that directly affect the final output.

We also revisited how CMYK works in print. Understanding how colours translate from screen to print helped me see why certain colours appear different once printed. It reinforced the importance of checking colour values and being mindful of how designs will actually reproduce physically.

What stood out to me was how detailed and precise this process is. Even a small error in file setup or colour handling can affect the final result. It made me realise that design doesn’t end at creating the layout it extends into how well the file is prepared for production.

This workshop helped connect many of the things I had been observing in previous weeks. It brought together packaging, print finishes, and technical execution into a clearer system.
